THE lady's dream.<br />

If she is kind unto his dog,<br />

He'll win at length the lassie.<br />

correspondent <strong>of</strong> Sir Walter Scott. He is the author <strong>of</strong> " A History <strong>of</strong> |<br />

the Isle <strong>of</strong> Man," <strong>and</strong> various other interesting works.<br />

<strong>The</strong> turrets <strong>of</strong> the Baron's tower.<br />

Were tinged with evening's light,<br />

When, wrapt in thought, the lady sought<br />

<strong>The</strong> warder's giddy height. \<br />

" Say, faithful warder, hast thou seen,<br />

Across the heathy wold,<br />

<strong>The</strong> manly form <strong>of</strong> my gallant lord,<br />

With his mail-clad warriors bold "<br />

" I've looked," he said, " across the plain,<br />

But no mail-clad men I've seen ;<br />

And all is silent, save the wind.<br />

That stirs the woodl<strong>and</strong>'s green."<br />

" <strong>The</strong>n wo is mine !" said the lady fair<br />

" Within my troubled mind<br />

Foreboding thoughts arise, <strong>and</strong> tell<br />

That fate has been unkind.<br />

" But haply, ere to-morrow's sun<br />

Awakes the sleeping flower.<br />

He yet again may bliss my arms.<br />

Within our ancient tower."<br />

Thus soothed by hope, she sought her couch,<br />

But broken was her sleep<br />
