Wheeler Cl<strong>in</strong>ic is a multi-service behavioral health agency provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

outpatient and <strong>in</strong>tensive mental health services, substance abuse, special<br />

education, crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention and counsel<strong>in</strong>g, foster care, early childhood<br />

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-CT)<br />

NAMI-CT is a volunteer organization <strong>of</strong> families, friends, and <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g with serious mental illness. Its purpose is to provide support,<br />

education, and advocacy to: keep <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong>formed <strong>of</strong> services and<br />

resources available to them <strong>in</strong> or near their communities; develop public<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> mental illness; and advocate for better services and<br />

Connecticut Department <strong>of</strong> Mental Health and<br />

Addiction Services (DMHAS)<br />

DMHAS ensures quality services for <strong>people</strong> with a psychiatric disability<br />

or an addiction disorder, or both, through a coord<strong>in</strong>ated array <strong>of</strong> services.<br />

DMHAS serves anyone 18 years or older who lives at or below<br />

the poverty level. Services provided <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

Community Psychiatric Support Services are designed to enable adults<br />

with psychiatric disabilities to live <strong>in</strong> communities. Support is <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

through residential, employment, social rehabilitation, and case management<br />

services to reduce the stress, which can precipitate the symptoms<br />

<strong>of</strong> mental illnesses.<br />

Inpatient Services <strong>in</strong>clude a comprehensive range <strong>of</strong> care for <strong>people</strong><br />

whose illness precludes treatment <strong>in</strong> a less structured sett<strong>in</strong>g. Inpatient<br />

facilities provide high-<strong>in</strong>tensity care, focus<strong>in</strong>g on cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>in</strong>terventions.<br />

Special Programs have been developed to meet the care/needs <strong>of</strong> specific<br />

groups. These <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>people</strong> who are homeless and mentally ill;<br />

abus<strong>in</strong>g substances and HIV-positive; deaf and hear<strong>in</strong>g impaired; dually<br />

diagnosed with a mental illness and substance abuse; and clients who<br />

are <strong>in</strong>volved with the courts.<br />

State Operated Facilities <strong>of</strong>fer acute care and rehabilitation services to<br />

Connecticut citizens. Clients receive <strong>in</strong>dividual and group counsel<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

family therapy, AIDS counsel<strong>in</strong>g and referrals, occupational therapy, l<strong>in</strong>kage<br />

to community and social services, and exposure to 12-step groups<br />

such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Priority access is granted to pregnant<br />

women.<br />

Community Treatment Programs are funded and monitored by<br />

DMHAS throughout the state, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g services exclusively for pregnant<br />

substance abus<strong>in</strong>g women and their children. Funded treatment <strong>programs</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong> residential and outpatient services to male and<br />

female substance abusers. There is also pre- and post-trial education, as<br />

well as crim<strong>in</strong>al justice <strong>programs</strong>.<br />

Substance abuse prevention organizations throughout the state are<br />

funded by DMHAS. Programs such as The Governor’s Prevention Partnership<br />

and the Connecticut Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse conduct <strong>in</strong>formational campaigns<br />

and the distribution <strong>of</strong> educational materials about alcohol, drugs,<br />

and mental health. 2-1-1 Infol<strong>in</strong>e operates the statewide referral service<br />

for <strong>in</strong>dividuals experienc<strong>in</strong>g problems with mental illness, alcohol or<br />

drug abuse.<br />
