Legal Services <strong>of</strong> Connecticut<br />

Connecticut’s legal assistance <strong>programs</strong> provide free legal services to<br />

<strong>in</strong>come-eligible <strong>people</strong> <strong>in</strong> crisis situations <strong>that</strong> <strong>in</strong>volve civil law, not crim<strong>in</strong>al<br />

law. Direct representation, legal counsel<strong>in</strong>g, referrals and legal self<strong>help</strong><br />

materials are available. Assistance is provided <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> law <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g hous<strong>in</strong>g; family; special education; public benefits; access<br />

to medical coverage and treatment; employment; energy assistance;<br />

Medicare, Social Security disability and the rights <strong>of</strong> elderly <strong>people</strong> and<br />

<strong>people</strong> with disabilities. Legal Services <strong>of</strong> Connecticut, Inc. screens<br />

cases for all civil legal assistance <strong>programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> the state, provid<strong>in</strong>g brief<br />

services and advice, community education materials, and, where appropriate,<br />

referrals to local legal services <strong>of</strong>fices for all non-crim<strong>in</strong>al-related<br />

HUSKY Infol<strong>in</strong>e is a program <strong>of</strong> the United Way <strong>of</strong> Connecticut and 2-<br />

1-1 Infol<strong>in</strong>e, provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation, referral and specialized customer<br />

service coord<strong>in</strong>ation on behalf <strong>of</strong> HUSKY members. Families enrolled<br />

<strong>in</strong> the HUSKY health <strong>in</strong>surance plan can call for <strong>help</strong> if they have problems<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g services from their HUSKY health plan or have questions<br />

about HUSKY services. Assistance is available <strong>in</strong> multiple languages.<br />

AIDS Legal Network (ALN) for Connecticut<br />

ALN is a collaborative project <strong>of</strong> the legal services <strong>programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> Connecticut<br />

<strong>that</strong> responds to the legal needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>people</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g with HIV/AIDS.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the situations confront<strong>in</strong>g <strong>people</strong> with HIV have legal remedies,<br />

and there are attorneys throughout the state who are will<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

able to represent <strong>people</strong> with HIV. ALN l<strong>in</strong>ks persons with HIV-related<br />

legal needs with these attorneys at no cost. ALN also <strong>of</strong>fers legal education<br />

and legal technical assistance, <strong>in</strong> the areas <strong>of</strong> family law, government<br />
