Expanded Food and Nutrition Education<br />

Program (EFNEP)<br />

EFNEP is a specially funded program <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture<br />

and the UCONN Cooperative Extension System. Its purpose is<br />

to teach families and youth with limited resources about food shopp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

skills, nutritious meal plann<strong>in</strong>g and preparation, and safe food storage<br />

and handl<strong>in</strong>g. These activities are aimed at lower<strong>in</strong>g the risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fant<br />

mortality, low-birthweight babies, and chronic diseases, as well as enhanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a child’s ability to learn and optimiz<strong>in</strong>g the diet quality when<br />

resources are limited. Education is primarily conducted on-site at community<br />

agencies; but <strong>in</strong>dividual counsel<strong>in</strong>g can sometimes be arranged.<br />

Serve New England Food Cooperative<br />

(SERVE)<br />

SERVE is a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it food cooperative <strong>that</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers monthly distributions<br />

<strong>of</strong> meats, produce and other grocery items at 30 – 50% discounts. SERVE<br />

operates 250 host sites – typically churches, senior centers, civic facilities<br />

or any accessible place where <strong>people</strong> gather – throughout New England,<br />

which are open to all persons regardless <strong>of</strong> age, race or <strong>in</strong>come<br />

level. To qualify, participants are required to complete two hours <strong>of</strong><br />

volunteer service a month <strong>in</strong> their own communities. All food purchased<br />

through SERVE is top quality and obta<strong>in</strong>ed through local distributors<br />

when available. Content varies from month to month, but a typical family<br />

meal package consists <strong>of</strong> four meat selections, eight or n<strong>in</strong>e produce<br />

items and staple products such as rice, peanut butter and more – all for<br />

only $20. Orders are due the first week <strong>of</strong> each month, and delivery is<br />

made on the third or fourth Saturday <strong>of</strong> each month. Orders may be placed<br />

through a local chapter, by phone or onl<strong>in</strong>e. Payment is made by cash,<br />

Nutrition for Women, Infants, and Children<br />

(WIC)<br />

WIC is a federally-funded food and nutrition education program for pregnant,<br />

postpartum and breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g women and their children up to the<br />

age <strong>of</strong> five. WIC provides nutrition <strong>in</strong>formation and healthy food such<br />

as, eggs, milk, beans, cheese, juice, cereal, peanut butter and <strong>in</strong>fant formula.<br />

Information on breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g and healthy eat<strong>in</strong>g are provided as<br />

well as Farmers’ Market coupons for designated months. Adm<strong>in</strong>istered<br />

by the Department <strong>of</strong> Public Health (DPH), WIC is designed as a preventive<br />

health measure for its participants. Eligibility is based on <strong>in</strong>come;<br />

residency; certification <strong>of</strong> nutritional risk; and a physical presence<br />

requirement, which means hav<strong>in</strong>g a WIC employee see your child.<br />

Congregate Meals and Home Meal Delivery<br />

Federally-funded food <strong>programs</strong> <strong>help</strong> improve the health <strong>of</strong> the elderly<br />

by provid<strong>in</strong>g nutritionally balanced meals and reduc<strong>in</strong>g the isolation <strong>of</strong><br />

many older <strong>people</strong>. Community-based Elderly Nutrition Projects, listed<br />

below, adm<strong>in</strong>ister the <strong>programs</strong>. Information on meals for the elderly<br />

can <strong>of</strong>ten be obta<strong>in</strong>ed from local senior centers or newspapers.<br />

The Senior Nutrition Program is for homebound elders unable to travel<br />

to local meal sites. Meals are prepared and delivered to the home. No fee<br />

is charged for the meals, but participants are encouraged to contribute<br />

toward the cost <strong>of</strong> the meals accord<strong>in</strong>g to their means. All donations are<br />

used to provide additional meals and services. For more <strong>in</strong>formation,<br />

call the nearest Elderly Nutrition Project listed below. There are also<br />

private Meals on Wheels <strong>programs</strong> <strong>that</strong> do charge a fee. They can be<br />

reached by call<strong>in</strong>g Infol<strong>in</strong>e: 2-1-1.<br />

The Congregate Meals Program provides at least one hot meal a day,<br />

five days a week, regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>come. No fee is charged, although contributions<br />

are encouraged. Meals are served <strong>in</strong> the community at senior<br />

centers, churches, and elderly hous<strong>in</strong>g projects. In some cases, kosher<br />

and ethnic meals are available, and <strong>of</strong>ten transportation can be arranged<br />

for those who cannot walk to the nearest site. Reservations are normally<br />

required a day or two <strong>in</strong> advance. People 60 years <strong>of</strong> age and older and<br />

their spouses are eligible, as well as handicapped or disabled <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

who reside <strong>in</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g facilities at which congregate nutrition services<br />
