The Village for Families & Children<br />
The Village for Families & Children is a private, nonpr<strong>of</strong>it community<br />
service agency provid<strong>in</strong>g prevention, treatment and placement services<br />
to children and families <strong>in</strong> the Hartford area. These <strong>in</strong>clude specialized<br />
foster care, such as therapeutic and medically fragile; special needs adoption,<br />
and post adoption services; outpatient, <strong>in</strong>tensive outpatient, extended<br />
day and residential treatment; assessment and support for children <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
with the courts; school-based family resource centers; after school<br />
<strong>programs</strong> for middle and high school students; and Friends <strong>of</strong> the Family,<br />
a resource and referral agency for pregnant and parent<strong>in</strong>g youth under<br />
21. Services are provided at three agency sites, <strong>in</strong> schools and <strong>in</strong><br />

Elders<br />
AARP<br />
AARP is a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it, nonpartisan membership organization <strong>that</strong> <strong>help</strong>s<br />
<strong>people</strong> 50+ have <strong>in</strong>dependence, choice and control as they age. AARP<br />
provides <strong>in</strong>formation; engages <strong>in</strong> legislative, regulatory and legal advocacy;<br />
assists members <strong>in</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>g their communities; and <strong>of</strong>fers a wide<br />
range <strong>of</strong> unique benefits, products and services to its 36 million members.<br />
Specific <strong>programs</strong>, some conducted <strong>in</strong> partnership with others,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
AARP Tax-Aide: A confidential, free and quality service available to<br />
middle and low <strong>in</strong>come taxpayers <strong>of</strong> all ages with special attention to<br />
those aged 60 and older. IRS certified volunteers are tra<strong>in</strong>ed to assist <strong>in</strong><br />
fil<strong>in</strong>g basic tax forms and answer tax questions.<br />
AARP Driver Safety Program: The nation’s first and largest classroom<br />
driver refresher course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older.<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong>ed volunteers <strong>help</strong> older drivers improve their skills while teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
them to avoid accidents and traffic violations.<br />
AARP Connecticut Chapters: There are 65 AARP chapters <strong>in</strong> CT.<br />
Chapters provide community service and advocacy opportunities locally,<br />
statewide and nationally. Chapters also <strong>of</strong>fer education, usually through<br />
a dynamic speaker <strong>in</strong>vited to a monthly meet<strong>in</strong>g. Chapters are a way to<br />
make new friends, develop your potential to lead and motivate others,<br />
and have a part <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g a better community.<br />
AARP Benefits Outreach Program: This program uses an onl<strong>in</strong>e screen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
tool developed by the National Council on Ag<strong>in</strong>g to connect adults<br />
55 and older with <strong>programs</strong> and services for which they may qualify,<br />
such as <strong>help</strong> pay<strong>in</strong>g for prescription drugs, energy and hous<strong>in</strong>g, and gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>-home supportive services and employment. To use this free, private<br />

Program.”<br />
AARP Money Management Program: Promotes <strong>in</strong>dependent liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for older <strong>people</strong> on a limited <strong>in</strong>come who cannot manage their f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
affairs and do not have friends and family who can <strong>help</strong>. Tra<strong>in</strong>ed volunteers<br />
<strong>help</strong> clients manage their money for daily liv<strong>in</strong>g. AARP recruits<br />
members to serve as volunteers and provides technical assistance.<br />
AARP Faith <strong>in</strong> Action Community Volunteer Transportation Program:<br />
Provides seniors and <strong>people</strong> with disabilities transportation <strong>in</strong><br />
their communities. Volunteers now serve <strong>in</strong> two local Faith <strong>in</strong> Action<br />
<strong>programs</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Middletown and New Haven regions.<br />
AARP Grief & Loss Program: Provides support to <strong>people</strong> experienc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a loss <strong>in</strong> their life. Volunteers are tra<strong>in</strong>ed to <strong>help</strong> a person through the<br />
griev<strong>in</strong>g process through one-on-one peer counsel<strong>in</strong>g and support groups.<br />

Alzheimer’s Association<br />
The Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut Chapter enhances the quality<br />
<strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong> all Connecticut residents affected by Alzheimer’s disease and<br />
related disorders through advocacy, education and support systems, while<br />
promot<strong>in</strong>g research efforts. A Helpl<strong>in</strong>e operates 24 hours a day, seven<br />
days a week and <strong>of</strong>fers emotional support to callers and provides <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
about Alzheimer’s disease, chapter services and community resources.<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ancial support to organizations serv<strong>in</strong>g older adults, as well<br />
as <strong>in</strong>formation and assistance on health <strong>in</strong>surance, community-based<br />

Breakthrough to the Ag<strong>in</strong>g (BTA)<br />
BTA, sponsored by the Capitol Region Conference <strong>of</strong> Churches and its<br />
affiliate agencies, tra<strong>in</strong>s volunteers throughout Connecticut to <strong>help</strong><br />
homebound and isolated older and disabled persons – usually aged 60 and<br />
over – rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent so they can enjoy and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a high quality<br />
<strong>of</strong> life. Friendly Visitors <strong>of</strong>fer companionship to <strong>people</strong> who are isolated<br />
and/or homebound. Weekly home visits last at least 90 m<strong>in</strong>utes. Friendly<br />
Shoppers provide grocery-shopp<strong>in</strong>g assistance to <strong>people</strong> who are isolated<br />
and/ or homebound through weekly or bi-weekly trips to the local market.<br />
A pilot Therapeutic Companions program has also begun to provide visitors<br />
to elders <strong>in</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes and other residential care facilities.<br />
