Consciousness Associated With<br />
Both Good And Bad Mind<br />
4. Consciousness that Are <strong>com</strong>mon to both good and bad minds are ::<br />
1. Contact, touch - Phassa<br />
2. Feeling, sensation – Vedana<br />
3. cognition, perception - Sanna<br />
4. Volition - Cetana<br />
5. One pointed-ness or concentration on one subject - Ekaggata<br />
6. Controlling faculty or principle - Jivitindriya<br />
7. Attention - Manasikara<br />
8. Initial application, thought - Vitakka<br />
9. Sustained application - Vicara (sustained application)<br />
10. Resolution, deciding <strong>com</strong>mitment - Adhimokkha<br />
11. Effort - Viriya<br />
12. Joyful satisfaction - Piti<br />
13. Will - Chanda<br />
These are all mental factors, which can associate with either good or bad states of mind.<br />
4.1 Contact –Touch - Phassa<br />
Contact between mind and its object. Here it means not physical contact, such as touching by<br />
hand or body but the contact between mind and object although mind is an immaterial state. It<br />
functions here as the aspect of touching on an object. Therefore, contact is defined as touching,<br />
contacting or linking. In some cases such mental functions are as prominent and perceptible as<br />
physical contact.<br />
Example - Let us elaborate; when a recuperating man sees a boy eating a lemon, he will salivate<br />
profusely. A timid person when he sees two man brawl trembles with fear. When an adolescent<br />
girl hears the voice of a boy of the same age group, she feels a peculiar flutter in her heart.<br />
These instances prove mental functions as aspects of touch, contact, etc. can occur and produce<br />
such reactions. This form of contact is very <strong>com</strong>mon in the world. It concerned with wholesome<br />
and unwholesome objects and it is associated with good mind and bad. The mind be<strong>com</strong>es wither<br />
moral or immoral, good or bad, as the case may be.<br />
4.2. Feeling - Vedena<br />
The feeling or sensation are six sense objects such as sight, sound, etc. which give rise to<br />
feelings. These six external sense-objects can be subdivided into three classes:<br />
