(ix) <strong>Part</strong>icipating in the MTN marathon by 537 MoES headquarters’ staff;<br />
(x) <strong>Sports</strong> for Life in Karamoja (SLIK) project continued to create awareness <strong>and</strong> build capacity of<br />
teachers in the Karamoja subregion;<br />
(xi) Initiated processes for development <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation of <strong>Sports</strong> facilities; <strong>and</strong>,<br />
(xii) Contributingquarterly subventions to National Council of <strong>Sports</strong> (NCS), a semiautonomous bod.<br />
4.5.4 HIV <strong>and</strong> AIDS<br />
In order to increase awareness <strong>and</strong> prevention in the subsector in FY 2011/12 the HIV/AIDS Unit<br />
achieved the following:<br />
(i) Conducted three (3) HIV/AIDS Technical Working Group Meetings for HIV/AIDS Focal Point<br />
<strong>Of</strong>ficers that play a strategic role in addressing HIV <strong>and</strong> AIDS at department level;<br />
(ii) Distributed 200 copies of the <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> Sector HIV/AIDS Prevention Strategic Plan to<br />
eight districts;<br />
(iii) With support from UNICEF, conducted condom <strong>Education</strong> at Nkozi University, Makerere<br />
University <strong>and</strong> Nkumba University;<br />
(iv) Developed Sexual <strong>and</strong> Reproductive Health Indicators to be integrated in the <strong>Education</strong><br />
Management Information System (EMIS); <strong>and</strong>,<br />
(v) SPEAR, in collaboration with <strong>Ministry</strong> of <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sports</strong>, continued to provide support to<br />
the roll out of <strong>Education</strong> Sector HIV <strong>and</strong> AIDS Workplace Policy.<br />
4.5.5 Information <strong>and</strong> Communication Technology (ICT)<br />
During the period under review 9 out of the 11 schools in the Karamoja region were supplied with<br />
television sets, decoders <strong>and</strong> educational content by Multichoice to help improve their teaching <strong>and</strong><br />
learning processes.<br />
4.5.6 Gender in <strong>Education</strong><br />
In the Gender unit, the following were achieved:<br />
(i) Disseminated Gender in <strong>Education</strong> Policy;<br />
(ii) Conducted training in Gender mainstreaming;<br />
(iii) Strengthened Institutional Capacity;<br />
(iv) Promoted Girls’ <strong>Education</strong>;<br />
(v) Affirmative actionstaken: Provided bursary scheme for needy students especially girls <strong>and</strong>built<br />
Female Managerial Capacity in <strong>Education</strong>; <strong>and</strong>,<br />
(vi) Implemented gender based training in various Universities.<br />
4.5.7 Environmental <strong>Education</strong><br />
During the period under review, the subsector in liaison with National Forestry Authority (NFA),<br />
developed <strong>and</strong> disseminated guidelines to education stakeholders on how to implement Environmental<br />
Management in <strong>Education</strong> Institutions.<br />
4.5.8 Teacher <strong>and</strong> Instructor <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training<br />
During the period under review the subsector:<br />
(i) Enrolled 16,239 preservice <strong>and</strong> 2,000 inservice PTE students in PTCs,2,000 NonFormal<br />
education students, 4,000 Secondary Teacher <strong>Education</strong> students in NTCs, 360 Technical<br />
Instructors in Instructors Colleges <strong>and</strong> 80 students in Mulago Health Tutors College;<br />
ESSAPR FY 2011/12 to inform the 19 th ESSR – OCTOBER 2012<br />
