APPENDIX I: PROBATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATIONS<br />

STAFF RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING<br />

! Formalize current outreach efforts to recruit minority probation counselors<br />

! Negotiate a modified civil service exam<br />

! Develop core staff training curriculum specifically tailored for juvenile probation and<br />

parole staff<br />

" New staff = 120 hours in first year<br />

" Veteran staff = 40 hours annually<br />

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AND LINKAGES<br />

! Expand information sharing and collaboration with police departments throughout the<br />

state<br />

! Expand Safe Streets model to all five (5) core cities<br />

! Expand Day <strong>Report</strong>ing Centers to all five (5) core cities<br />

! Support the continued development and enhancement <strong>of</strong> Juvenile Hearing Boards<br />

! Support the expansion <strong>of</strong> Juvenile Drug Courts and Truancy Courts within agreements<br />

outlining roles and responsibilities between DCYF and the Family Court as to case<br />

management and service delivery functions<br />

CASELOAD MANAGEMENT<br />

! Achieve target caseloads as follows<br />

" Probation supervisor to probation counselor: 1:8<br />

" Probation caseload: 30:1 (Current = 41:1)<br />

" Parole caseload: 35:1 (Current = 47:1)<br />

" Safe Streets caseload: 15:1 (Current = 17:1)<br />
