But at any stage of life one must make a place <strong>for</strong> both puer and<br />

senex. In fact, whoever lives one pattern exclusively risks constellating<br />

<strong>the</strong> opposite. Enantiodromia is waiting in <strong>the</strong> wings: <strong>the</strong> more<br />

one-sided we are, <strong>the</strong> more likely it is that <strong>the</strong> opposite will break<br />

through to spin our lives around.<br />

A healthy, well-balanced personality is capable of functioning<br />

according to what is appropriate at <strong>the</strong> time. That is <strong>the</strong> ideal, seldom<br />

attained without conscious ef<strong>for</strong>t and a psychological crisis.<br />

Hence analysis quite as often involves <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> a well-controlled<br />

person to reconnect with <strong>the</strong> spontaneous, instinctual life as<br />

it does <strong>the</strong> puella’s or puer’s need to grow up.
