Living The <strong>Age</strong> <strong>Friendly</strong> Programme:<br />

Nora Webster, outgoing Chair of the Older<br />

People’s Forum in Kilkenny.<br />

“I liked that the <strong>Age</strong> <strong>Friendly</strong><br />

programme was inclusive<br />

with all the service providers<br />

working with older people – not<br />

for older people.”<br />

Nora Webster is an excellent example of active<br />

citizenship. Following her retirement, she<br />

returned to education, completing a degree in<br />

Community Development at NUI Maynooth.<br />

She was already a volunteer with the Senior<br />

Help Line and Victim Alliance when she first<br />

heard about the <strong>Age</strong> <strong>Friendly</strong> programme in<br />

Kilkenny. “I went along to the meeting in a<br />

local hotel. It was well publicised and there<br />

were representatives from local businesses<br />

and the local authority. After that, I attended<br />

the consultation. At this meeting, people were<br />

invited to join the Older People’s Forum.”<br />

“Initially, I didn’t think anything would come of<br />

it. I had been to county consultation meetings<br />

before and they just died down but this time,<br />

I got really interested. I liked that the <strong>Age</strong><br />

<strong>Friendly</strong> programme was inclusive with all the<br />

service providers working with older people –<br />

not for older people.”<br />

Nora Webster became the Chairperson of the<br />

Older People’s Forum in Kilkenny in 2010. The<br />

Executive Committee of the Older People’s<br />

Forum was formed in 2011. “We realised<br />

that we couldn’t get anywhere with the larger<br />
