Introduction:<br />
One of the smallest counties in the Republic, Monaghan is best known for its<br />
hilly landscape. Like all of Ireland, it has become more urbanised in recent<br />
years yet the rural farming community is what still defines Monaghan most.<br />
The population is ageing but resilient in the face of recent emigration of young<br />
people. Both proud and courageous, Monaghan people maintain close links with<br />
Northern Ireland with commercial and family ties often straddling counties in<br />
both jurisdictions.<br />
Monaghan Facts and Figures<br />
• The population of County Monaghan is 60,000.<br />
• Fourteen per cent of the population is aged 65 and over (7,460).<br />
• Twelve per cent (7,000) of the population has a disability, 46 per cent of<br />
whom are 65+.<br />
• Seven in ten people in Monaghan live in rural areas.<br />
• One in three people over 65 live alone, many of them in the countryside.<br />
• Farming and food industry are the main economic activities.<br />
• Unemployment currently stands at about 10 per cent.<br />
