Chapter 2: Consultation and Consolidation<br />
Introduction<br />
The launch of the <strong>Age</strong> <strong>Friendly</strong> programme in your county is a celebration of<br />
what’s to come. Now is the time to spread the message about Ireland’s national<br />
<strong>Age</strong>-<strong>Friendly</strong> Cities and Counties programme and the excitement surrounding<br />
the launch of the programme in your county. Have some material available so<br />
that people can bring home flyers and leaflets with contact details and the <strong>Age</strong><br />
<strong>Friendly</strong> Ireland website.<br />
Consultation<br />
Consultation with older people in your city/county is probably the most important<br />
aspect of the entire <strong>Age</strong> <strong>Friendly</strong> programme. Capturing the voice of the older<br />
person is key to the entire process and it’s important to remember that the eight<br />
original WHO themes were developed following consultation with older people in<br />
the original group of <strong>Age</strong> <strong>Friendly</strong> cities.<br />
Task One:<br />
Gather all existing information about older people in<br />
your city/county<br />
It’s essential to gather all existing data about older people in your city/county –<br />
how many there are and where they live. The Central Statistics Office will give<br />
you a demographic picture of your city/county. Pobal will also have maps of<br />
age distribution in each county. Find out from the Social Inclusion Officer at the<br />
51
