KOREAN VETERANS<br />

The Spina Bifida (SB) program is a comprehensive healthcare benefits program<br />

for birth children of certain Vietnam and Korea veterans who have been diagnosed<br />

with SB (except Spina Bifida Occulta). The SB program provides reimbursement<br />

for medical services, pharmacy, durable medical equipment and supplies.<br />

CHILDREN OF WOMEN VIETNAM VETERANS (CWVV) BORN WITH<br />

CERTAIN BIRTH DEFECTS<br />

The CWVV Health Care Program is a federal health benefits program for children<br />

of women Vietnam veterans born with certain birth defects. The CWVV Program<br />

provides reimbursement for medical care related to covered birth defects and<br />

conditions associated with the covered birth defect except for spina bifida.<br />

PRESUMPTIVE HEALTH<br />

CONDITIONS<br />

Normally, claimants must show proof of relationship between service and the<br />

condition being claimed; however, the VA presumes that specific disabilities<br />

diagnosed in certain veterans were caused by their military service because of<br />

unique circumstances in that particular geographic location.<br />

WHAT CONDITIONS ARE PRESUMED TO BE CAUSED BY<br />

MILITARY SERVICE?<br />

Traditionally, there are three categories in which veterans may qualify for a<br />

service-connected disability based on a condition to be presumed by military<br />

service. These groups are veterans who were diagnosed with a chronic disease<br />

such as arthritis, diabetes, or hypertension within one year of being released<br />

from active duty; veterans diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS),<br />

also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, at any time after discharge or release from<br />

qualifying active service in which they have continuous service of 90 days or<br />

more; and veterans who served in the conflicts/geographic regions associated<br />

with those diagnosed conditions identified below:<br />
