The Other War Against the Jews:
Jeffrey Herf’s Nazi Propaganda for the Arab World

Jeffrey Herf, author of The Jewish Enemy (Belnap, 2006), now turns
his attention to the Arabs. Every picture tells a story, and the cover photo is
picture perfect. The body language shows Hitler, the animated teacher, lecturing
to his ardent pupil Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of
Jeusalem. On one level we have no idea what the two are talking about.
Then again, we know—there are very few topics on which teachers from
the Master Race and non-Aryan students can agree.
Herf has investigated the social transmission of Nazi propaganda in
ways that are only now coming to light. The long arm of Nazi rhetoric was
achieved partially via printed leaflets and short-wave radio broadcasts from
Berlin (Axis Broadcasts in Arabic) utilizing the Qur’an and Arab folklore
(Mein Kampf was avoided because it was anti-Arab, and The Protocols of
the Elders of Zion was Eurocentric though its conspiratorial focus on Inter-
