1 DAY Session 1:<br />

Introduction to mental health and<br />

mental disorders<br />

Session objectives : To welcome participants to the training, provide an overview of the<br />

course objectives and timetable, and explore ideas about mental health<br />

and mental disorders.<br />

Session duration :<br />

2 hours<br />

Activity 1 : Introducing your other half<br />

Time : 1 hour<br />

Purpose : To introduce participants to each other and the training program.<br />

Materials : Black/white board <strong>for</strong> presentation, illustrated introduction cards<br />

(Appendix A), large piece of paper and marker <strong>for</strong> the facilitator.<br />

Directions : Step 1<br />

Greet the class and introduce yourself to them.<br />

Give a brief outline of the four day program and the topics you will be<br />

covering.<br />

Step 2<br />

Hand out the illustrated cards found in Appendix A (each picture has been<br />

split in two). Each person gets one-half of a picture.<br />

Instruct participants to find the person with the other half of their<br />

illustrated card.<br />

Participants then introduce themselves to their partners and share three<br />

pieces in<strong>for</strong>mation about themselves, <strong>for</strong> example:<br />

• <strong>The</strong>ir name and village<br />

• One positive thing about themselves OR one of your favourite roles as<br />

a community health worker<br />

• <strong>The</strong>ir expectations <strong>for</strong> participating in this training.<br />

Allow five minutes <strong>for</strong> discussion in pairs then participants should<br />

introduce their partner to the rest of the group and mention what their<br />

partner hopes to gain by participating in the training.<br />

<strong>The</strong> facilitator writes the participants expectations of the training on a large<br />

piece of paper and sticks it up on the wall of the training room if possible.<br />
