2 DAY Session 5:<br />

Mental Health First Aid – Part Two<br />

Session Objective : To provide MHFA in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> a range of common symptoms associated<br />

with mental disorders.<br />

Session duration : 2 hours<br />

Activity 11 : Responding to a person experiencing excess<br />

worry and panic<br />

Time : 1 hour<br />

Purpose : To teach participants how to respond to and help someone who is<br />

experiencing excessive worry or panic.<br />

Materials : Case study B (found in Appendix E) plus Role play scripts 1 & 2 (found in<br />

Appendix F).<br />

Directions : Step 1<br />

Ask the group what they remember about Common Mental Disorders:<br />

• What are some of the symptoms associated with someone who is<br />

experiencing excessive worry (anxiety)?<br />

• What are the symptoms of a panic attack?<br />

(See Session Three, Activity 6 <strong>for</strong> a revision of anxiety and panic<br />

disorders)<br />

List the participant responses on the black/white board.<br />

Step 2<br />

Give a presentation based on the ‘In<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> Presentation’ box<br />

INFORMATION FOR PRESENTATION<br />

Factors that may contribute to excessive fear, worry or panic<br />

• Periods of stress sometimes cause us to worry more, <strong>for</strong> example:<br />

• severe arguments<br />

• death of someone close<br />

• financial problems<br />

• physical and sexual violence<br />

• physical illness<br />

• excessive use of alcohol.<br />
