INFORMATION FOR PRESENTATION
Using alcohol does not in itself mean that a person has a disorder. 5 Use of alcohol becomes
a disorder when:
•
•
•
it leads to problems at work or home
it causes damage to health
the person becomes physically and psychologically dependant on alcohol.
Harmful use of alcohol can contribute to the development of a mental disorder and can
occur as a result of a mental disorder.
Why do people use too much alcohol?
Many people start using alcohol because it creates increased feelings of pleasure and
decreased feelings of distress.
Problems arise when people use alcohol as a way of coping with difficulties or stress caused
by things like relationship conflicts or financial worries.
Once people start using alcohol regularly they develop a physical and psychological need
to continue, this is called dependence or addiction.
