Practice based skills – Part One<br />
Session Objective : To develop the capacity of the CHWs to engage with a person<br />
experiencing a mental health disorder and provide support and<br />
advice.<br />
Session duration : 2 hours<br />
Activity 19 : Introduction to Counselling<br />
Time : 30 minutes<br />
Purpose : To provide CHWs with basic skills <strong>for</strong> community counselling.<br />
Materials : Counsellors skills cards (found in Appendix H)<br />
NB : <strong>The</strong> counsellor skills cards will need to have the label translated prior<br />
to the session.<br />
We strongly recommend that the facilitators read the Barefoot Counsellor:<br />
a manual <strong>for</strong> community workers be<strong>for</strong>e facilitating this session.<br />

Counselling skills<br />
All of us, in our own way, counsel other people when they have problems, without really<br />
knowing that we are doing so.<br />
As CHW’s you often sit and listen to people in your village or community talk about their<br />
problems and assist them to find solutions – this is a <strong>for</strong>m of counselling.<br />
Counselling is not simply giving advice. Counselling is a two-way process that helps the<br />
person being counselled become more aware of his/her own strengths and weaknesses,<br />
and actively encourages him/her to develop solutions to problems. 7<br />
Counselling is a ‘talking treatment’ but there is much more to counselling than just talking,<br />
a counsellor needs to be:<br />
