diyen Khabelov, oyunların Azerbaycan<br />
için çok büyük bir öneme sahip olduğunu,<br />
Azerbaycan’ın dünya veya Avrupa şampiyonası<br />
gibi bir etkinliği en yüksek seviyede organize<br />
etme ve ev sahipliği yapma yeteneğine ve<br />
kapasitesine sahip gelişmiş bir ülke olduğunu<br />
söylüyor. Kısacası Khabelov geçmişte ünlü<br />
bir sporcu, günümüzde bir yönetici olarak<br />
Azerbaycan’ın oyunlara ne kadar ciddi hazırlıklar<br />
yaptığını açılış töreninde net bir şekilde<br />
gördüğünü söylüyor. Lord Risby de Avrupa<br />
Oyunları’nın ilkinin Bakü’de gerçekleşiyor<br />
olmasını “inanılmaz” olarak yorumluyor ve<br />
açılış töreninin nasıl da mükemmel geçtiğini<br />
anlatıyor. Öte yandan Statoil Azerbaycan<br />
Başkanı Tanguy Cosmao Azerbaycan’ın böylesine<br />
büyük bir organizasyon yapabileceğini<br />
tüm dünyaya gösterdiğini söylüyor ve ekliyor:<br />
“Hazırlıkları tamamlayabilmek için liderlik<br />
çok önemli. Bakü hazırlıkları mutlulukla<br />

This has been a brilliant ceremony. I think it is incredible to be in Azerbaijan, that<br />
the first games taking place here in Baku. It started off at the most brilliant and<br />
successful way last night. I feel Baku will be a model for many European Games in<br />
the future.<br />
the capacity and capability to organize and<br />
host great events such as world or European<br />
championships. Yesterday’s famous athlete<br />
and today’s president, Khabelov indicates<br />
that he clearly saw Azerbaijan’s level of<br />
preparations at the opening ceremony. Lord<br />
Risby regards Baku’s hosting the 1 st European<br />
Games as ‘unbelievable’ and tells us how<br />
wonderful the opening ceremony was. On<br />
the other hand, Tanguy Cosmao, President<br />
of Statoil Azerbaijan, indicates that Azerbaijan<br />
proved its capability to realize such a<br />
major organization and adds, “They need a<br />
lot of leadership to be able to get ready. And<br />
Baku showed they can be ready or happy.”<br />
A MAGICAL OPENING<br />
Let’s go back to the other day, to the magical<br />
opening ceremony which fascinated<br />
many people and made them say sentences<br />
starting with “Azerbaijan proved…”; which<br />
eliminated the distance between Baku and<br />
London. With its deep-rooted history to the<br />
primitive man, Azerbaijan prepared a splendid<br />
opening ceremony where it displayed<br />
all its wealth and messages at the Baku<br />
Olympic Stadium. Winner of UNESCO<br />
Music Prize, famous mugham artist Alim<br />
Qasimov is playing the drums and counting<br />
down from 24. 24 is an important number<br />
for Azerbaijan. As of this year, Azerbaijan is<br />
an independent country for 24 years. Moreover,<br />
Azerbaijan’s population is around 9.5<br />
million and 40% of the population is under<br />
25. Such a young country is hosting a major<br />
organization. By the way, did you hear Qasimov’s<br />
influential beats? As the countdown<br />
comes closer to zero, the music blasts away<br />
with 50 drummers, and then 1000 dancers<br />
fill up the sparkling stadium with fireworks.<br />
Azerbaijan, famous for its carpets,<br />
is displaying the carpet motifs on dancers’<br />
costumes. 16 thousand square meters of<br />
fabric has been used for dancers’ skirts.<br />
Imagine 13 olympic swimming pools; you<br />
can cover them with this much fabric. Such<br />
an impressive show fits well to Azerbaijani<br />
carpets which are listed in UNESCO’s List<br />
of Intangible Cultural Heritage.<br />
What about the performance in honor of<br />
Nizami Gencevi? 1100s came to life in the<br />
stadium. Author of ‘Leyla ile Mecnun’ and<br />
an advocate for women’s rights in the 12 th<br />
century, Nizami’s 9 works were performed<br />
by 300 artists. Another enchanting thing<br />
in the stadium was a huge pomegranate.<br />
Pomegranate seeds, which represent love,<br />
luck and rebirth, spread all around the sta-<br />
