28 Amplifiers➔Analog Current Shunt MonitorsCurrent shunt monitors are a unique class ofhigh common-mode voltage differenceamplifiers that have the ability to operate onsingle, low-voltage supplies.Current shunt monitors have a common-modevoltage range that is independent of powersupply (as opposed to classicaldifference amplifiers where the common-modevoltage range is proportional to powersupply voltage). Unlike most high commonmodevoltage difference amplifiers, currentsense shunt monitors have gains for sensinglow differential voltages (50mV to 100mV).Current sensing can be done on either thelow-side (ground) or high-side (powersupply). Low-side sensing is simple andrequires no special components, but it oftencannot be used because it either disturbsground or requires additional wiring. Currentshunt monitors are intended to make it easyto implement high-side current sensing.Discrete solutions to high-side sensing aredifficult and costly to implement.Common-Mode VoltageThe common-mode voltage range is typicallythe first parameter to be considered and thisbreaks down into two basic categories ofcurrent shunt monitors: families that handleonly positive common-mode voltages above+2.7V (with a choice of upper limits up to+60V); and a family that handles –16V to +80V.The ability to sense common-mode voltages atground and below is required when the powersupply that the current is being sensed fromcould get shorted out, or if the shunt resistor isin an inductive load that could be exposed toinductive kickback. In addition, a commonmoderange to –16V allows the current shuntmonitor to be used to sense current in –12Vto –15V power supplies. Lastly, it easilywithstands battery reversals in 12Vautomotive applications.Current Output vs. Voltage OutputAnother broad category is the type of output.The current output families enable the gainto be set by selecting the value of an externalload resistor. The fastest current shuntmonitor is the INA139 or INA169. Currentoutput INA170, and current output deviceshave a minimum common-mode voltage of+2.7V, with a maximum up to +60V.Voltage output current shunt monitors havethe advantage of a buffered voltage outputwhich eliminates the need for an additionalop amp in many applications. These devicesare available in fixed gains of 14, 20, 50 and100. It features the abilityto measure both the shunt drop and bus voltage and calculate the power. It also has twolevels of watchdog alarms and a fast analog overlimit comparator for critical shutdown.Other unique features are the sensing of bidirectional currents and has excellent low shuntdrop accuracy.The INA209 current shunt monitor features a common-mode range of 0V to +26V whileoperating from a single +3V to +5.5V supply and drawing a maximum of 2mA of supplycurrent.
