Temperature Sensors83Digital Temperature SensorsTI’s high-accuracy, low-power temperaturesensors are specified for operation from –40°Cto +125°C and are designed for cost-effectivethermal measurement in a variety ofcommunication, computer, consumer, industrial and instrumentation applications. These silicon-based temperature sensors aredesigned on a unique topology that offersexcellent accuracy and linearity overtemperature. Low power and standardcommunication protocol pair nicely withlow-power microcontrollers and batterypowereddesigns. The digital temperature output of the TMPfamily is created using a high-performance,12-bit, delta-sigma ADC that outputstemperatures as a digital word. Programmingand communication with the TMP1xx family ofdevices is done via an I 2 C/2-wire or SPIinterface for easy integration into existingdigital systems.Temperature Sensor CoreA typical block diagram of the TMP family ofdigital temperature sensors is shown below.Temperature is sensed through the die flag ofthe lead frame where the temperature sensingelement is the chip itself, ensuring the mostaccurate temperature information of themonitored area and allowing designers torespond quickly to “over” and “under”thermal conditions.TemperatureSDASCLALERTGND1234DiodeTempSensorA/DConverterOSCTMP175, TMP75ControlLogicSerialInterfaceConfig.and TempRegisterTypical block diagram of the TMP family of digitaltemperature sensors.8765V+A0A1A2Temperature SensorsFeatures of TMP DigitalTemperature Sensors➔Several TMP digital sensors offerprogrammable features, including overandunder-temperature thresholds, alarmfunctions and temperature resolution. Withextremely low power consumption in active(50µA) and standby (0.1µA) modes, theTMP12x family offers as low as 1.5°Cminimum error in a SOT23 package and isan excellent candidate for low-powerthermal monitoring applications. The new TMP105 and TMP106 are theworld’s smallest digital temperaturesensors. Available in a tiny 1mm x 1.5mmchipscale package, they use only 50µA ofcurrent and are ideal for portableapplications including mobile phones, portable media players, digital stillcameras, hard disk drives, laptops, andcomputer accessories.
