"We want (our players) to take part <strong>in</strong> community service and help out with our tournament when <strong>the</strong>y’renot play<strong>in</strong>g," said Neely. "It’s important for me that <strong>the</strong>y want to give back and that <strong>the</strong>y thank <strong>the</strong>ir parentsfor foot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bill (to play AAU ball)."It’s a big undertak<strong>in</strong>g."The St<strong>in</strong>grays currently have 16 boys’ and girls’ teams with about 160 players for <strong>the</strong> 2011 season. Theboys’ teams range from third-grade through 12th-grade and <strong>the</strong> girls’ teams are fifth through n<strong>in</strong>th grades.The organization currently uses eight gyms <strong>in</strong> six different Island sites, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g St. Teresa’s, Our Lady Starof <strong>the</strong> Sea, <strong>the</strong> Jewish Community Center, Holy Rosary, Holy Child and <strong>the</strong> CYO Center <strong>in</strong> Port Richmond.As <strong>the</strong> new season commences, <strong>the</strong> goal rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> same as always for <strong>the</strong> St<strong>in</strong>grays. Ultimately, Neelybelieves it’s imperative his kids improve."I believe <strong>the</strong> CYO and AAU ball go hand-<strong>in</strong>-hand," he said. "The better <strong>the</strong> CYO gets, <strong>the</strong> better AAU gets.The better AAU gets, <strong>the</strong> better CYO gets."I honestly want each kid <strong>in</strong> our organization to improve," Neely added. "I tell parents, ‘I guarantee your kidwill be a better player, just by go<strong>in</strong>g to practice two to three times a week."We’re go<strong>in</strong>g to help get your kid to <strong>the</strong> next level, whatever that next level may be for he or she."And do <strong>the</strong> parents buy it?"I’ve had many more parents tell me yes, <strong>the</strong>ir kid is a better player, than no," Neely concluded© 2011 SILive.com.
