<strong>CSI</strong> frosh swimmer Danila Novikov takes third <strong>in</strong> 200 IMPublished: Thursday, March 24, 2011, 9:02 AMStaten Island AdvanceByKNOXVILLE, Tenn. — College of Staten Island freshman Danila Novikovf<strong>in</strong>ished third <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 200-yard <strong>in</strong>dividual medley last night at <strong>the</strong> NCAA DivisionIII Championships at <strong>the</strong> Allan Jones Aquatic Center.Novikov, of Russia, f<strong>in</strong>ished strong to take third place <strong>in</strong> 1 m<strong>in</strong>ute, 49.99seconds — a personal best that alse shattered <strong>CSI</strong> and CUNY Conferencerecords.Novikov f<strong>in</strong>ished less than a second beh<strong>in</strong>d gold medalist Paul Dyrkacz ofWilliams College (1:49.10). Redland College’s Christopher Depew was second at1:49.57.Danila Novikov“I feel very good about <strong>the</strong> peformance,” said Novikov, who struggled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prelims with a time of 1:50.83,putt<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eighth lane <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>als. “I did <strong>the</strong> best I could and I am f<strong>in</strong>e with <strong>the</strong> result because Ireally swam well. Maybe I could have done better if I was <strong>in</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r lanes, but overall I am veryhappy.”So too was Dolph<strong>in</strong>s head coach Oleg Soloviev.“For a freshman, compet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his first national championship and on <strong>the</strong> first day of competition, it wasabsolutely outstand<strong>in</strong>g,” said Soloviev. “He had <strong>the</strong> fastest split <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> breaststroke turn which was veryimpressive.”Novikov had been seeded second with a qualify<strong>in</strong>g time of 1:50.54.There were 51 entrants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 200 IM, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>CSI</strong> teammates Andrey Tarasov and Vladislav Romanov,who missed <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>als cut.In <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>als, all eyes were on <strong>the</strong> eight contenders.Page 96 of 179
