When she began work<strong>in</strong>g as a paraprofessional, she formed an African Culture Club to ensure that highschool students learned about <strong>the</strong>ir heritage and <strong>the</strong> contributions of African Americans. Through a Rites ofPassage mentor<strong>in</strong>g program, students learned <strong>the</strong> traditions, history and similarities of Africa to o<strong>the</strong>r partsof <strong>the</strong> world.The clubs traveled to East Coast colleges, participated <strong>in</strong> Black History programs, and Kwanzaa celebrations.“I love to brag. I told my students <strong>the</strong>y need to give me material,” said Ms. Ashon-Poku. Her studentscooperated.Several became teachers and one is a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>in</strong> Brooklyn.
