Stand<strong>in</strong>g are, from left,Margaret E. Berci, co-chair SI 350 Academic Conference; w<strong>in</strong>nerDevorah Helfrich; Besty Dubovsky of <strong>the</strong> Staten Island Foundation;w<strong>in</strong>ners Izabela Koenovic and Marissa Misiti, and Phillip Papas, co-chairof <strong>the</strong> SI 350 Academic Conference.Advance (second place); Middle SchoolDivision: Laura Galante/ Conference House(first place); Izabela Kolenovic/ DeckerFarm (second place); Secondary SchoolDivision: Anthony Randazzo/ Geribaldi-Meucci Museum (first place); MarissaMisiti/ Prohibition Park (second place).First-place w<strong>in</strong>ners received $1,000; second-place w<strong>in</strong>ners received $250.On hand for <strong>the</strong> presentation were Betsy Dubovsky, executive director, Staten Island Foundation; MargaretBérci, co-chair of si350 Academic Conference/Symposium, associate professor of Education, <strong>CSI</strong>; LoriWe<strong>in</strong>trob, si350 co-chair, Wagner College History Department chair.The competition challenged preservice teachers and <strong>in</strong>-service teachers to develop curriculum-alignedmaterials, based on <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Place-Based Education, for use <strong>in</strong> Staten Island schools to improveteach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> borough's shared and diverse past.About <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ners: Dianne Wallace developed a teacher guide to <strong>the</strong> Supreme Chocolatier site, todayconsidered to be one of <strong>the</strong> Island's most profitable and historical companies as well as one of <strong>the</strong> country'sPage 38 of 179
