Drive defensivelyAvoid unnecessary acceleration and brakingmaneuvers. To do so, keep an adequate distancebetween you and the vehicle in front ofyou. A defensive and smooth driving stylekeeps fuel consumption down.Avoid high engine speedsOnly use first gear when setting off. In secondand higher gears, accelerate without hesitationor pauses. When accelerating, shift up beforereaching high engine speeds. When you reach the desired speed, shift intothe highest applicable gear and drive with theengine speed as low as possible and at a constantspeed. As a rule: driving at low engine speeds lowersfuel consumption and reduces wear.CoastingWhen approaching a red light, take your foot offthe accelerator and coast to a stop in the highestapplicable gear.On a downhill slope, take your foot off the acceleratorand coast in a suitable gear. The fuel supply is interrupted when coasting.Switch off the engine during lengthystopsSwitch off the engine when stopping for lengthyperiods, e.g. at traffic lights, railroad crossingsor in traffic congestions. You achieve fuel savingseven if standing time is as short as approx.4 seconds.Switch off functions you do not need atthe momentFunctions such as the air conditioner, seatheating or rear window defroster draw largeamounts of power and consume additional fuel.Especially in city traffic and in stop-and-go drivingthey have a considerable impact. Therefore, switch these functions off when they are notreally needed.Have the vehicle servicedHave the vehicle serviced regularly to achievegood economy and a long vehicle life. BMWrecommends having the vehicle serviced at aBMW center. Also note the BMW service system, refer to page 126.General driving notesClose the trunk lidOperate the vehicle only when the trunklid is closed. Otherwise, exhaust fumescould enter the interior of the vehicle.
