Hazards, safety precautions and infection controlare covered. Intraoral techniques, landmarks, processing of radiographsand the mounting and viewing of films are emphasized.Regulations and management of clients with special needs arecovered. Students assess clients, complete treatment plans, andperform a required number of examinations and radiographicsurveys on manikins and selected clients in a laboratory setting.Students are responsible for client recruitment.DH 105NUTRITIONPrerequisite: DH 1012 lectures per week: 2 hrs creditA lecture-seminar which provides comprehensive review of thecomponents of a diet and the principles of nutritional requirementsas they relate to health and disease.Attention is given tothe consideration of diet in reference to body tissues in generaland to the teeth in particular. Special emphasis will be placedon the method of controlling dental caries through patientnutritional counseling, gingivitis and periodontics.An independentstudy research project is required on preventive dentistry.DH 106GENERAL AND ORAL PATHOLOGYPrerequisite: DH 1012 lectures per week: 2 hrs creditAn introduction to general pathology with consideration of themore common diseases affecting the human body, clinicalpathology of the diseases affecting the teeth and supportingstructures including the physiological and pathological changeswhich affect the gingivae and the hard and soft structures of theoral cavity.DH 107FUNDAMENTALS OF DENTAL HYGIENEPrerequisite: Consent of program coordinator1 lecture, 2 lab hrs per week: 2 hrs creditThis first of five clinical dental hygiene courses is designed forthe entry-level, first-year dental hygiene student. Studentsperform selected services on clients, student partners, and alaboratory manikin, but do not provide a full range of clientservices. Didactic and clinical studies include infection control,clinical barriers, patient reception and positioning, instrumentgrasp, finger rests, tooth brushing and interdental care. Studentsare responsible for client recruitment.
