DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, COURSESCAREER PROGRAMSASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCEDEGREE (A.A.S.) GUIDELINESThe Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) represents completionof a minimum of 60 credit hours in a technical or careerprogram. Certificates are awarded after completion of up to50 credits that focus on specific occupational or technical areasof study.2006-2008 CATALOGII.AREA OF CONCENTRATION/PROGRAM REQUIREMENTSProgram requirements are established by each department to reflectthe core competencies expected in the workplace for specificoccupations.III. ELECTIVESElectives are determined by each department based on options for specializationwithin a program or to provide students with choices relatedto their career goals.A.A.S. DEGREE REQUIREMENTSAn Associate in Applied Science degree is awarded to thosestudents who successfully complete a program of study for aspecific occupational area.Candidates for the A.A.S. Degree must fulfill the followingrequirements:1. Enrolled at <strong>Prairie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong> for two semesters immediatelypreceding graduation and successfully completed at least15 semester hours of credits at <strong>Prairie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong>(excluding proficiency credits).2. Completed program requirements as specified by the occupational/technicaldegree program (minimum of 60 semesterhours).This includes a General Education Core Curriculum,program-mandated occupational/technical courses, and electivesas determined by the A.A.S. degree program.3.Attained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 ona 4.0 scale in all <strong>Prairie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong> courses.4. Filed appropriate evidence of high school graduation or GEDcertificate with the Admissions and Records Office.5. Satisfied the U.S. and <strong>State</strong> of Illinois Constitution requirementsby submitting a high school transcript that proves thetest was successfully completed in high school, or by takingPOLSC 140 or 152 or a proficiency exam.CERTIFICATE GUIDELINESCertificates are awarded after completion of up to 50 creditsthat focus on specific occupational or technical areas of study.Certificates are awarded to those students completing educationand training in a particular occupational field of study.Astudent will be recommended for a certificate if the followingrequirements are met:CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS1. Completed the certificate requirements as specified in thecertificate program.2. Attained a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in the coursesidentified in the certificate program.3. Completed 15 credit hours or one-half of the required credithours for programs that exceed 30 credit hours, as a studentat <strong>Prairie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong> and enrolled at <strong>Prairie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong>during the regular semester immediately preceding theawarding of the certificate.DEGREES,CERTIFICATES,COURSESA.A.S. DEGREEAREA A: Communication (6 semester hrs)ENG 101 [C1 900] Composition I - with a grade of C or betterCOMM 101 [C2 900] Principles of CommunicationAREA B: Humanities and Fine Arts (3 semester hours)One course, specified by program or selected from list for Area B onpages 42-44.AREA C: Mathematics - demonstrate competence by:a) Placing into MATH 095 or above on the <strong>Prairie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong>Assessment Test; orb) Completing MATH 090 - with a grade of C or better;orc) Completing a math course(s) as specified by the degree program.AREA D: Physical and Life Sciences (3-4 semester hours)One course, specified by program or selected from the list for Area Don pages 42-44.AREA E: Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 semester hours)One course, specified by program or selected from the list for Area Eon pages 42-44.70
