Mr. Lindsey takes offense at this, “This can only beshown as how hurtful that this telescope and this project is to our Hawaiian people.Today I called ten Hawaiian people that was close to me, and not one of them statedthat they think it's a good idea. Not one. The all stated, ‘Are you crazy? What arethey doing? Why are they destroying our mountain?’ And as far as the trade-offs, asI have said previously, I oppose this project. I respect gaining scientific knowledge, Irespect what can come out of it, but not up at Haleakalā. I refuse to have Haleakalāprostituted for the sake of this project. You cannot take advantage of Haleakalā andthrow ideas out to what is sacred.”“…I'm Native Hawaiian, and I don't want it.” “I want to know between now andMay 1st or 2nd…what are you guys going to do to inform the community? Becauseas you can see, it's not the community here.” Mr. Bustamente recommends having ameeting at a Hawaiian Homes community center. Mr. Bustamente also asks howATST will benefit him.“I am a Native Hawaiian who does attach religious and cultural significance toHaleakalā. I will be negatively affected and offended by the proposed undertaking ofthe Advanced Technology Solar Telescope.” Mr. Raymond mentions a sitefeasibility report in which the six top sites for ATST were assessed. In this reportMr. Raymond states that the author wrote “...the entire Haleakalā mountain is rich intraditional and spiritual significance to the indigenous Hawaiian culture.” Hecontinues, “Then I looked at all the other site feasibility reports...I didn't see anyother site that said sacred. La Palma did not say sacred. Big Bear did not say sacred.Haleakalā, sacred.” Point being, that the NSF and NSO have known since 2003 thatone of their top proposed ATST locations was a mountain considered sacred toHawaiians.XXXNoneNoneNoneNoneNoneNoneAPPENDIX F (2): Supplemental Cultural Impact Assessment For the Proposed AdvancedTechnology Solar Telescope (ATST) at Haleakalā High Altitude ObservatoriesTMK (2) 2-2-07:00852
