Although the individuals or organizations responsible for circulatingpetitions in support of <strong>ATST</strong> are unknown, Kilakila O Haleakaāa (a non-profit group formed toprotect Haleakalā from further development) circulated the petitions opposing <strong>ATST</strong>. Onlypetitions collected after DEIS publication have been represented in this report, as they representthe majority of petitions collected.There were three different petitions circulated during the public comment period for theDEIS:1. A petition stating the individuals support of <strong>ATST</strong> (Figure 4);2. A petition (Kilakila O Haleakalā Petition A) opposing <strong>ATST</strong>, supporting the “NoAction Alternative” as described in the DEIS (NSF 2006) (Figure 5); and3. A petition (Kilakila O Haleakalā Petition B) B, opposing <strong>ATST</strong> , supporting the “NoAction Alternative” with a clause that states, “I am interested in becoming aconsulting party regarding the religious [word religious is crossed out] and culturalsignificance of Haleakalā, as a traditional cultural place, through the Section 106process” (Figure 6).Figure 4.
