The Commission stronglyrecommends adoption of the No Action alternative contained withinthe Draft EIS. The basis for this recommendation is as follows: 1.Haleakalā is a sacred place to the Native Hawaiian people. 2. Theproposed telescope would be a desecration of the physical andspiritual manifestation of the cultural/historical mana of the NativeHawaiians. 3. The proposed telescope is not consistent with thedesignation of the summit of Haleakalā as a Traditional CulturalPlace or Property (TCP) and its eligibility for listing on the NationalRegister of Historic Places. 4.The proposed telescope could impactthe nearby burrows of ‘ua‘u birds, which are an endangered species.”XNoneNoneFriends ofHaleakalāNational - Ms.Mary Evanson,President18-Oct-2006“The friends of Haleakalā National Park (FHNP) strongly opposeslocation the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (<strong>ATST</strong>) Projecton Haleakalā.” The cultural resource evaluation “lacks credibility asan unbiased expression of the thinking of native Hawaiians.” FHNPstates, “This project will adversely change the summit of Haleakalāforever, causing irrevocable loss of natural, cultural and scenicresources” The FHNP has concerns for the endangered petrel or ‘ua‘uand how construction of <strong>ATST</strong> might affect their nesting sites.
