• project summary booklet, which provided an overview of the proposed project, includinginformation on the exploration history, <strong>development</strong> plan, production system, subsea installations,project schedule, environmental management, Canada-Newfoundland benefits, and environmentalassessment and DA process;• project update booklet that highlighted what was heard throughout the scoping/consultation programas of May 2000 and what <strong>Husky</strong> Oil was doing to address the various items raised;• display boards for the open houses (based on information from the project description, and summaryand update booklets);• comment forms (distributed at the open houses and with the project description mail out);• project information telephone number (724-7244 and 1-877-724-7244) at <strong>Husky</strong> Oil’s office in St.John’s;• project-specific web site (www.huskywhit<strong>rose</strong>.com); and• media briefings and press releases.2.4.1 Key Informant WorkshopsThe purpose of the key informant workshops held in March 2000 was to discuss the proposed project,environmental review process and potential effects, and to ensure community issues and concerns wereidentified and addressed in the DA. The workshops in Clarenville and Marystown were designed for ageneral discussion, while the four workshops in St. John’s had specific themes, namely fisheries,environment, community and benefits. Attendance at these workshops was by invitation to keystakeholders to ensure a range of local interests were represented and that the group size was conduciveto an open discussion. A total of 76 people participated in the six workshops representing a range ofcommunity sectors and interests, including local business, transportation, housing, health, education,social services, recreation, public safety, fishing industry, environment industry, <strong>development</strong>associations, and municipal and provincial government.The workshops involved <strong>Husky</strong> Oil representatives providing an overview of the project followed by aninformal, facilitated discussion of issues and concerns. Discussions at the community and benefitsworkshops focused primarily on benefits related subjects, including employment and businessopportunities, opportunities for women, skill requirements and training. Also, discussed wereaccommodations and facilities for workers and their families, employee support systems, and oil spillpotential and response capabilities. At the fisheries workshop, items discussed were fisheries (historical,current and future), cumulative effects, vessel traffic, exclusion zones, amount and type of activity at thesite before and during <strong>development</strong> and production, waste management, oil spills and chronic pollutionissues. During the environment workshop, discussion focused on seabirds, marine mammals, fish,environmental assessment and DA process, responsibility for vessels, waste management, accidentalevents, chronic pollution, oil spills, cumulative effects, baseline studies and monitoring programs.White Rose DA Project Summary • January 2001 Page 30
