The first series of open houses featured a set of displays about the proposed White Rose <strong>oilfield</strong><strong>development</strong>, including information on <strong>oilfield</strong> location, general field information, <strong>Husky</strong> Oil landholdings and working interests on the Grand Banks, White Rose exploration history, <strong>development</strong> plan,selected production system, subsea installations, environmental management, Canada-Newfoundlandbenefits, DA and environmental assessment. Displays at the second series of open houses focused onproviding an update of the work undertaken for the DA. This second set of displays highlighted whatwas heard throughout the scoping/consultation program and <strong>Husky</strong> Oil’s plans for addressing theseitems.Comment forms were distributed at both series of open houses, with 97 forms being completed duringthe first series of open houses and 38 completed at the second series. During the first series of openhouses, 77 percent of respondents indicated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the proposedWhite Rose <strong>oilfield</strong> <strong>development</strong>. At the time of the second series, 91 percent of respondents indicateda level of satisfaction with the project.The primary items discussed during the open houses and noted on the comment forms were benefitsrelated, including employment and business opportunities, skill requirements, training, economicbenefits for local communities and the province, production facility selection and developing the naturalgas resources at White Rose. Other items noted were environmental effects, oil spills, ice management,and safety equipment and procedures. The four themes heard during the workshops, about learningfrom previous offshore oil <strong>development</strong>s, communication, project information and expectations, werealso heard during the open houses.2.4.3 Other Community Meetings<strong>Husky</strong> Oil representatives met with various municipal and business groups while preparing the DA.<strong>Husky</strong> Oil made presentations to town council and chamber of commerce representatives in the Arnold’sCove area, Clarenville, Corner Brook, Gander, Marystown, Placentia and St. John’s. At each of theseevents, <strong>Husky</strong> Oil representatives made a brief presentation about the project and addressed questionsraised by participants. Discussions focused primarily on benefits and <strong>development</strong> related items. In all,about 120 people participated in these presentations.<strong>Husky</strong> Oil representatives made a presentation at a St. John’s Board of Trade luncheon in April 2000and at the annual petroleum industry conference hosted by the Newfoundland Ocean IndustriesAssociation (NOIA) in June 2000. In both cases, a brief presentation was followed by an opportunityfor questions. Over 700 people participated in these sessions. Presentations were also made to the St.John’s Rotary Club, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland,Consulting Engineers of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canadian Association of Power Engineers andNewfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities.White Rose DA Project Summary • January 2001 Page 32
