GROUNDING EQUIPMENTHow to specify grounding jumpers.A grounding jumper in its basic formconsists of two clamps, one pair of ferrulesand a length of cable. The clamps can be identical to each otheror quite different depending on eachgrounding application. Because of this, ground clamps are sold individually, notin pairs. Salisbury offers a wide varietyof clamps including C-clamps, flat jawclamps, socket clamps, duckbill clampsand specialty clamps for unique situations.Clamps are offered in either bronzeor aluminum alloys and are manufacturedto meet the current specifications of ASTMF 855. All clamps are tapped to accept a 5/8-11 UNC threaded stud.To attach a clamp to the grounding cablerequires the use of a ferrule. Ferrulesare compressed on the strands of thecable to provide a low resistance permanentconnection. The size of the ferruleis determined by the size of thecable. Ferrules are available in aluminumor copper and can be used with eitheraluminum or bronze clamps. Two ferrulesare required for each jumper thereforethey are sold in pairs. Ferrules aremanufactured to the specifications ofASTM F 855.The final component that makes up aground set is the grounding cable itself. The size of the cable is dependent onthe short circuit current capacity of thesystem being grounded. Once this is determined, only the length of the cable andthe color of the jacket need to be specifiedto complete the jumper.3. Ferrules1.“C” ClampGround Set Checklist2. Cable1. Flat Jaw Clamp3. Ferrules1. Specify the clamps. Two are required for a complete jumper. The maximumamperage of the clamp is designated by the ASTM grade of each clamp. Be surethat the clamp will meet or exceed the maximum amperage rating of the groundcable that it will be used with.2. Specify the cable. Once the short circuit capacity of the system has been determined, choose the appropriate size cable. Specify the cable length, and the colorof the jacket desired.3. Specify the ferrules. One pair of ferrules is required per jumper. The size of theferrule must match the size of the cable that it will be used with. Specify whethercopper or aluminum, and threaded or plain.4. Specify the options. List any optional equipment that is desired. This can includehanger studs, contact studs, heat shrink tubing, markings, clear strain relief, etc.S ALISBURYSetting industry standards since 1855. 7520 N Long Ave Skokie Il 60077 Toll Free 877.406.4501 Fax 847.679.2401H-3
