Table 6.4 shows adult mortality rates, 15-59 ( 45 q 15 ), by geographical and socioeconomiccharacteristics for the period 0-4 years prior to the survey. Not surprisingly, the probability of dyingamong women in urban areas is lower than in rural areas. However, this is not the case among males, where there is no urban-rural difference (Figure 6.2). The Central zone has the highest mortality. TheNorth zone shows the lowest mortality levels; The position of the South zone between the Central andNorth zones , may be attributed to the urban bias introduced from the exclusion of more than one-third ofthe rural areas in the South zone as discussed in Chapter 1. Correction for completeness and coverage inthe South would likely push the mortality limits as high as or higher than the Central zone. There is no clear pattern in mortality according to wealth status except for those in the wealthiestgroup, where mortality rates are lowest for both sexes. Mortality does not show a clear pattern byremoteness.Table 6.4 Adult mortality by backgroundcharacteristics (household deaths)Adult mortality rates by background characteristics, based on household deaths for the period 0-4 yearsprior to the survey, Afghanistan 2010BackgroundcharacteristicProbability of dyingbetween age 15 and 59( 45 q 15 ) per 1,000Female MaleResidenceUrban 142 160Rural 156 160ZoneNorth 128 141Central 181 174South 147 161Wealth quintilePoorest 163 162Second 162 160Middle 153 170Fourth 158 158Wealthiest 138 153Remoteness quintileMost remote 154 132Second 136 155Middle 196 199Fourth 144 166Least remote 135 165Total a 151 161Note: A figure in parentheses indicates a less reliableestimate, with a relative error of 20 percent or more.aAdjusted for age distribution of the respondent110 | Adult Mortality
