However, there iscollaborative evidence that the successful implementation of the community-based National SolidarityProgram (NSP) by the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) which has investedlarge amounts of funds to support water and sanitation, has resulted in a marked improvement andwidespread access to safe drinking water in the past few years (MRRD, 2011). 2Not surprisingly, households in urban areas have greater access to an improved source of drinkingwater than households in rural areas (77 percent compared with 49 percent). The most common source ofdrinking water in both urban and rural areas is a tube well or borehole, with about three in ten householdsin urban areas and two in ten households in rural areas using this source. Urban households are also morelikely than rural households to have drinking water piped into their dwelling, yard, or plot (23 percentversus 3 percent). More than two-fifths of households (42 percent) are accessing drinking water from anon-improved source. Almost half (49 percent) of rural households and one-sixth (18 percent) of urbanhouseholds obtain drinking water from a non-improved source. The two major non-improved sources ofdrinking water in rural areas are unprotected dug well (19 percent) and surface water (17 percent).
