Earlyteenage pregnancy can cause severe health problems for both the mother and her child. Moreover, anearly start to childbearing greatly reduces the educational and employment opportunities of women and isassociated with higher levels of fertility. Table 3.9 shows the percentage of women age 15-19 who havehad a live birth or who are pregnant with their first child and the percentage that have begun childbearing,by background characteristics.Twelve percent of women age 15-19 have started childbearing, with 8 percent having had a livebirth and 4 percent pregnant with their first child. By age 19, one-third of women have startedchildbearing. Early childbearing is higher among women in rural areas, those in the Central zone, andwomen in the Western region compared with their counterparts in the other geographic areas. Earlychildbearing is strongly associated with women’s education and wealth, and decreases as education andwealth increase. Early childbearing and its relationship to remoteness is less pronounced.Fertility, Marriage, and Family Planning | 49
