4.1.4 Number and Timing of Antenatal VisitsANC is more beneficial in preventing adversepregnancy outcomes when it is sought earlyin the pregnancy and is continued through delivery.The WHO recommends that a woman withoutcomplications have at least four ANC visits to receivesufficient ANC to detect health problemsassociated with a pregnancy. In the event of anycomplications, more frequent visits are advised andadmission to a health facility may be necessary.Table 4.4 shows that one-sixth (16 percent)of pregnant women make four or more ANC visitsduring their entire pregnancy. Urban women (34percent) are almost three times as likely as ruralwomen (12 percent) to receive four or more antenatalvisits.Less than one in five women (18 percent)made their first ANC visit before the fourth monthof pregnancy.
