Some of the selected EAs were too large. In order to minimize the task of listing all thehouseholds in a large EA, the selected EAs with an estimated number of households greater than 200were segmented. Only one segment was selected for the survey with probability proportional to thesegment size. The methodology and the detailed household listing procedure were addressed in theHousehold Listing Manual.Table A.3 Sample allocation of households and EAsDomain Stratum nameStratumnumberHouseholdsallocatedEAsallocatedRural of Baghlan 9 672 21Rural of Badakhshan 17 896 28Rural of Takhar 18 832 26Rural of Kunduz 19 576 18Rural of Samangan 20 320 10Rural of Balkh 21 800 25Rural of Sari Pul 22 480 15Rural of Jawzjan 28 352 11Rural of Faryab 29 800 25Urban of North 35 2,304 72Total North 8,032 251Rural of Kabul 1 384 12Rural of Kapisa 2 224 7Rural of Parwan 3 288 9Rural of Maydan Wardak 4 352 11Rural of Logar 5 192 6Rural of Panjsher 8 96 3Rural of Bamyan 10 224 7Rural of Ghor 23 480 15Rural of Daykundi 24 352 11Rural of Badghis 31 352 11Rural of Hirat 32 960 30Rural of Farah 33 352 11Urban of Central 36 3,744 117Total Central 8,000 250Rural of Nangarhar 6 1,408 44Rural of Laghman 7 448 14Rural of Ghazni 11 1,248 39Rural of Paktika 12 864 27Rural of Paktya 13 512 16Rural of Khost 14 640 20Rural of Kunar 15 672 21Rural of Nuristan 16 224 7Rural of Uruzgan 25 320 10Rural of Nimroz 34 128 4Urban of South 37 1,536 48Total South 8,000 250Afghanistan 24,032 751NorthCentralSouthNote: The rural areas of Kandahar, Hilmand, and Zabul provinces are excluded forsample selection due to security concerns.A.4 SELECTION PROBABILITY AND SAMPLING WEIGHTBecause of the non-proportional allocation of the sample to the different survey domains and to theirurban and rural areas, sampling weights are required for any analysis using AMS 2010 data to ensure theactual representativeness of the survey results at the national level and as well as at the domain level.Since the AMS 2010 sample was a two-stage stratified cluster sample, sampling weights were calculatedAppendix A | 149
