FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETIES
Every county in Scotland is included in the interest area of a family history society, which is like a county
genealogical society in the U.S., and is made up of paying members, mostly amateur family historians, who
often volunteer to index records of genealogical value. Many societies publish monthly newsletters and
sometimes quarterly journals. They all have web sites on the Internet where they list their publications and
provide other research helps such as look-up exchanges and message boards. Some provide limited research
assistance for a fee. Check them out at: www.safhs.org.uk. You can also click on ‘Societies’ under ‘Other
