WHAT GROUPS EXISTED AND WHERE? To determine what nonconformist churches existed in any given place, look in: • Gazetteers such as Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary of Scotland (FHL 941 E5L, 1851). • The New Statistical Account of Scotland (FHL 941 B4sa or http://edina.ac.uk/StatAcc/) NONCONFORMIST RECORDS AT THE FHL To determine what nonconformist records are available at the Family History Library, look in: • The Scottish Church Records Index on computer on Family Search DOS and OPR index on microfiche. • The Family History Library Catalog under your locality of interest. • The International Genealogical Index for any included there. The archives has daily user fees. • Write to the repository or church with the records and have them searched for a fee. For addresses, check the Scottish Church Records Union List in the library. NOTE: Not all records survive; and nonconformists did not always register either. Scotlandspeople.com www.scotlandspeople.com have put on their website the pre-1855 Presbyterian Church records of births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths. OVERVIEW The Parish Chest: Beyond the Christening, Marriage and Burial Registers Dan Poffenberger, AG ® – poffenbergerds@familysearch.org The casual English genealogist will no doubt search the Church of England parish registers of christenings, marriages and burials for the parishes in which their ancestors lived. However, depending on the parish, there can be a wealth of information in other records kept in the parish chest. Parishes were not only the center of worship for town inhabitants but often the civic and social center as well. Historically, parishes were formed where ministers would serve groups of people who lived near each other for economic reasons. For almost all parishes, especially away from large cities, parish boundaries were formed out of long time custom and geographic practicality, not because of government decree. The importance of this cannot be overstated. As a result, while church and civic laws and conventions were passed down from higher authorities, the execution of them can vary widely from parish to parish. 1 In fact, the lack of direct government involvement in the formation of parishes as recent as 1835 led to the statement from the 1 st Annual Report of the Poor Law Commission that there were no fewer than “15,635 parishes or places separately relieving their own paupers.” 2 Relief of the poor always generated records, most often at the parish level. The big question is whether or not they have survived and how they may be of use to genealogists. The story is told of an overseer in Warlingham, Surrey named Simon Baker who “had the chest in his private possession. He [immigrated] to America, and neither the chest nor its contents was ever heard of again. To make matters worse, the vicar informed the council that the previous day he had turned out another old chest in the church, and destroyed its contents of ‘worthless papers’.” 3 In most cases, the records have now been deposited at the appropriate County Record Office though many may still reside at the parish church. Many counties have published lists of the existing parish chest records and their location. Poor relief was not the only (typical) civil function performed by the parish.
