Other household members are grouped together by age and gender, but names are not given. When researching in this time frame it is essential to locate other records, particularly probate records [which often name the spouse and children] church records, land and property records, etc. These early census records are still useful for locating families in a specific place. 1790 Census was taken 2 August 1790 – count was to be completed in nine months. Congress extended the count until 1 March 1792 [11 states] � MISSING: Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee and Virginia. Maine is part of Massachusetts and Kentucky is part of Virginia. � Virginia [reconstruction for 1790 & 1800 Census taken from tax lists] http://www.binnsgenealogy.com/VirginiaTaxListCensuses 1800 Census was taken on 4 August 1800 – count completed in nine months [14 States] 1810 Census taken on 6 August 1810 – count due in nine months but was extended to ten months [16 States and Territories] 1820 Census taken on 7 August 1820 – count due in six months but extended to thirteen months [22 States and Territories] Interesting Tidbit on 1820 If you have a free white male ancestor born between 1802 and 1804, you’ll be able to narrow that age down to those three years. There are columns for males “between 16 and 18” (born between 1802 and 1804) and again for males “of 16 and under 26” (born between 1795 and 1804). It’s also important to be aware that he’ll be counted twice, once under each category, so be careful not to add an extra teenager. Also, you can estimate that any males counted in the 16-25 range who are not in the 16-18 field, will have been born roughly between 1795 and 1801. 1830 Census taken on 1 June 1830 – count due in six months but extended to twelve months [28 States and Territories] 1840 Census taken on 1 June 1840 – count due in nine months but extended to eighteen months [30 States and Territories] NOTE: Men of the same name referred to as Sr. or Jr. were not necessarily father and son. These designations were often used to distinguish between two different people of the same name in the area – Sr. for the elder, and Jr. for the younger.
