What’s New with FamilySearch in 2012 Presented by Tara Bergeson www.FamilySearch.org FamilySearch launched a new website in early 2011 that provides a richer family history experience by putting all FamilySearch content, services, and products on the same site. Here is what’s new in the last few months. Home Page The links on the home page have changed for easier access to the records or features. New to the FamilySearch home page is: new links, “What’s New,” and the “Civil War Project.” What’s New FamilySearch is updated and released every three months, so check back often to see the changes. Some of these updates are only minor “behind the scenes” fixes that you may not recognize. Others are obvious improvements that make your FamilySearch experience richer and more rewarding. To see what’s new, click the What’s New link. 1940 Indexing Project On 2 April 2012 NARA is releasing the 1940 Census in digital format. FamilySearch is joining with other genealogical organizations to coordinate a massive effort to index these valuable census records. Be a part of preserving and sharing the census records of the “Greatest Generation.” Go to www.the1940census.com to learn more and get started! More Records The FamilySearch website has many record collections from around the world, and each month, more are added. At the end of 2011, there were over 3 billion names in FamilySearch! New Search Options New search options have been added in the last few months. The new search options include: Single Search Form The Advanced search feature has been replaced with all of the search capabilities on a single screen where you can narrow your search by Event and Relationship. • Multiple Events. You can now easily search multiple events, such as birth, marriage, residence, and death, at the same time. • Multiple Relationships. You can search for a spouse and/or parents. Refine Your Search You now have the option of changing the search information about your ancestor from the Search screen. This may give you different or better results. IGI Batch Number You can now search for historical records using batch numbers from the International Genealogical Index.
New Results Screen Based on user feedback and testing, FamilySearch designed a new results screen. It has a new layout, and a new image viewer. New Layout The new format will make viewing search results easier by clustering information into similar groupings within columns. The first column contains the name of the individual, the name of the collection the person was found in, and the time period the record collection covers. The second column includes information about event dates and places. The third column includes relationship information, such as spouse, children, and other family relationships. In this new layout, it is much easier to scan the results quickly for dates, places, and relationships. New Image Viewer Up to now, FamilySearch.org has required that you use Flash to view images of records. However, Flash does not work on many mobile devices. Images on FamilySearch.org are now displayed directly in your browser using HTML. This new viewer looks almost the same as the old Flash one. You don’t need to do anything to prepare your computer to use this new viewer. Free Live Assistance You can now get free live assistance in three easy ways. By scrolling down you will find an area on the left side of your results page called Free Live Assistance. You can contact us with any of these three ways: • Toll Free Call (855) 403-1836 • Chat Online with Support • E-mail support@familysearch.org Get Research Help A new link on the left side of the results page called Get Research Help provides: Join a research community. Would you like to collaborate with others who are researching in the same areas or topics as you? You are invited to join any of the following communities, click to learn more: • Facebook Communities. Facebook pages focused on researching various topics and sharing news and updates for each area. • FamilySearch Forums. FamilySearch discussion forums for help with research questions • Skype Groups. Chat groups with discussions between those researching in the same areas Visit the FamilySearch wiki. This link takes you to the FamilySearch wiki. Trees The Trees link allows you to search family pedigrees that have been submitted. Finding a family pedigree can save you hundreds of hours of work. Always verify the information found on Trees. Search by AFN Number When you search Trees, you can now search by using the Ancestral File number (AFN). This number was once assigned to records in the Ancestral File. This is a fast way to find a specific person if you know his or her AFN. Pedigree Resource File The Pedigree Resource File has recently been added to Trees increasing the number of linage linked pedigrees.
