German Archives- Full of Hidden Treasures! Baerbel K. Johnson, AG ® E-Mail : johnsonbx@familysearch.org German archives hold many different record types that may include information about your ancestral family. For instance, town guild records may include a Gesellenbrief , or journeyman’s certificate , that allowed your ancestor to travel abroad and seek employment in his trade. Land records or marriage contracts can shed light on his economic situation. Most of these records are not available at the Family History Library. WHAT IS AN ARCHIVE? An archive is an institution that stores material that • Was created by an organization or an individual during the normal course of business • Is no longer needed • Is of lasting value Types of archives Archives vary according to carrier organization and focus area, such as • State/federal archives • church archives • Communal archives • Nobility area, house-, and family archives • University archives • Archives by specific focus areas [i.e. military, economics, politics] • Media archives • others German archives mostly function as independent units. They are responsible to their respective carriers [i.e. the Bundesarchiv to the federal government]. They differ in organization and in the rules they have for the use of materials. ARCHIVE JURISDICTIONS Each archive is assigned a certain area, the Archivsprengel. Details are usually found on the archive website or in published descriptions. Records for one locality may be found in several archives, because the jurisdictions may have changed repeatedly. Local history must be studied carefully. Example: Meisenheim am Glan Meyer’s Gazetteer of the German Empire provides the following snapshot of 1871 jurisdictions: • Located in the Rhineland Province of Prussia, is a county seat, larger town • Has Lutheran, Reformed, Catholic parishes and a synagogue • Has its own mayor’s office and civil registration • Court district is Koblenz • Military conscription district: Bad Kreuznach • Various other civil offices
Archive jurisdictions: • Self-administration: local, town, or municipal archive. • Church: Archiv der Evangelischen Kirche im Rheinland or Bistumsarchiv Trier. • Early history: 12th Century: Counts of Veldenz, received town rights in 1315, 1444: Pfalz- Zweibruecken, 1815: Hessen-Homburg, !866: Prussian Rhineland. • State: until 1815 the State Archive of Speyer, 1815-1966: State Archives of Hessen, 1866-1918: State Archive of Koblenz. There is some overlap. • Military records: State Archive of Koblenz. • Other institutions: various archives. Topics of interest may have been under different jurisdictions than expected. Elementary education, for instance, was largely the responsibility of the Church, so school records may be found in church archives with other parish records. PRINTED ARCHIVE INVENTORIES AND GUIDES • may be found in books on microfilm available through a family history center. • vary in format and the type of information provided. • may include information about boundary changes and various levels of jurisdictions. In the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC), search under • “[locality] or [topic]: Archives and inventories” • Check each level of jurisdiction [town, county, district, region, historical area etc…] • Be creative.
