through recycling” workshop and the “Food fair”. We presentedour activities and project at CCD Iasi Spring Galla. We contacted local authorities and asked their support tomake a selective waste collection centre in the schoolyard,as waste management is such a problem in our area. Wealso tried to negotiate a contract with the waste managementcompany for selective collection of waste for recycling. We also gathered materials for our “Green manifesto”,an illustrated how to be green guide for people of allages. We gave interviews in the local newspapers tomake our project and ourselves known.ACHIEVED OBJECTIVESRECOMMENDATIONSI would strongly recommend that you involve at leastanother teacher to help you with the project. Not havinga partner (especially if you’re planning on workingwith younger children) could prove a handful. Startsmall, make a clear-cut plan and stick with it. Leavea margin of error; there could be unpredicted delays. Finally, choose your student wisely, because if he/sheloses interest, you will have to do his/her part too.We raised awareness about carbon footprint and weinvolved our school and the local authorities in a jointeffort to educate people about the importance of a smartwaste management system and of sustainable living.BIGGEST OUTCOMES OF THE PROJECTThe biggest change I think came within ourselves, ourteam (which practically extended to the entire school ofmore than 300 people). As we progressed with our project,we became increasingly committed, increasingly awareof the injustices that are done to us as future generation. What started as a project, ended up being a mission. Wethink that what we started will create a ripple effect andwe will soon begin to see real changes in our community.WHAT WENT WELL? WHAT WENT NOT SO WELL?..Due to an unfortunate event, our project kick-startedwith a two-month delay. Also, while everything was goinggreat with our selective collection centre, the wastemanagement company working in our area and whichagreed to our terms, terminated the contract without notice. Therefore, the plan is on hold until the town’s hallauctions the service and finds a new contractor.IMPACT ON THE SCHOOL’S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMI think that more people realised that it is important toteach ecology in schools, and because the curriculumdoes not provide it, we have to make up for its absenceby integrating it somehow in classes.Projects Report 45
