I gave my students the opportunity tomake decisions. I promoted our project among the teachers and the authorities in thetown educational department, trying to involve a bigger amount of people.The students participated in the discussions and events, they provided different ideas,and, actually, we had some leaders. Children participated in the project actively.There were several small teams working on different issues, preparing for a biggerevent, however, they had a common goal and the events were conducted by the wholegroup, involving as many people as possible.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONTOPICWe worked on encouraging young people to reduce their pressure on the planet and makingthem contribute to a socially and environmentally friendly environment. One of theaims was to lower their ecological footprint and raise people’s awareness of the environmentalproblems by becoming active citizens.MAIN ACTIVITIESYuliya Nayavko informed the school on the project events by announcements and postersin our School newspapers, articles in the local newspaper, web blogs, school websiteTo involve the local community, I organized a meeting at the educational department forschool youth clubs’ coordinators where we planned our work on Ecological month in April.UAEuroclub “Beam of Europe”, Peace Corps volunteers celebrated the Earth Hour 2013 byplaying ecological games, speaking about global issues. We promoted it with posters inevery school and lots of people joined us by switching off the light.Senior students had a meeting with the Candidate of Sciences from the Ukrainian NationalForesty University. He told the students about the World Environmental Constitution.Students also learned about different researches that are being held in the CarpathianMountains. RECOMMENDATIONS▪▪Involve as many people as possible▪▪Cooperate with educational authorities, they mightsupport your ideas▪▪To plan the project event using SMART objectives▪▪To brainstorm students for their ideas and identify thosethat are of the biggest interest for them▪▪Let students be responsible and lead the projectamazing differences. 40 students from all schools plantedfive beautiful flower beds on one of the town squares.We did the school survey at the Ecological Fair on April 1.We had some workshops on raising awareness about people’sdamage to the nature. More than 75 students measuredtheir ecological footprint, had a survey at school. ThePeace Corps volunteer conducted two workshops on reusingplastic bottles into useful things, showed ecological films.All schools took pictures of the dirtiest places in our town,displayed them in the town council. We participated in theAll-Ukrainian cleaning up event, planted flower beds. Aschool Footprint conference on April 17 was a great success.Students prepared reports on saving the planet.About 150 students from all town schools celebrated EarthDay on the main town square. We played ecological gamesdrew our planet where every school had its own continent.ACHIEVED OBJECTIVESDuring the project we gave young people the knowledgeand skills to measure and lower their ecological footprint.We involved five local schools in the project. We sharedthe materials, showed films on the ecological issues, promotedtips on how to save the planet and its resources.Ecological conferences were held in all schools.We encouraged young people to improve their communitydemonstrating by example. During the cleaning up campaignabout 600 people made their surroundings cleaner.The pictures, taken before and after the cleaning up, showedWe managed to make the Earth Day celebration a bigtown event. The people’s deputies came to thank studentsand teachers on their activeness and supportedthem in their activities.BIGGEST OUTCOMES OF THE PROJECTWe involved all town educational establishments, communityauthorities and organizations in our project.We have raised a great students’ interest. Students from allages and their parents help us with collecting used paper.The cleaning-up project changed young people’s behaviour.They try keep their community clean. Young learners madea display of drawn pictures of endangered flowers in ourlocal area to prevent their destroying. Now students areaware that they can do a lot to make our planet greener.We will have the presentation of the project at the Parentalschool meeting in May and September.WHAT WENT WELL? WHAT WENT NOT SO WELL?..This was the first ecological project and it was a big success.The presentations and reports during the projecthad a big influence on the participants. They were able tosee their progress and this inspired them greatly.However, we are still collecting the used paper for recycling.It’s difficult to find a company interested in collecting it.IMPACT ON THE SCHOOL’S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMWe decided to have the similar celebrations next year. Wewill plant flowerbeds and trees to create a school garden.We will have annual ecological events to raise awarenessof people and encourage them to reduce their pressureon the planet and to contribute to a socially and environmentallyfriendly community.HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE?The end of the project celebration coincided with the celebrationof the Earth Day. The teams of every school prepareda poster on ecology, a game and we drew a Big Greenplanet in the town centre. Every school got a certificate. Projects Report 69
