I would have liked it to have been more ofjust a facilitator but this is the first project my school has put on. Nevertheless, the teamand I worked together. We made the decisions together but the students implemented allthe aspects of the project. As our school continues to participate in projects my role willbecome more like a facilitator. I understood that my students first needed me to set anexample of how the behind the scenes aspects of a project work.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONTOPICOur main focus was ecological footprint. We wanted to teach our community that everyone;no matter if they live in a <strong>small</strong> village or a big city, has an ecological footprint andneeds to be aware of their impact on the earth.MAIN ACTIVITIESOur main activities were based around the theme Think Globally; Act Locally,which to us meant education into action. Our first activities were based on showingthe community how and in which way they were leaving an environmentalfootprint. We did this through researching our community. We determined that thebiggest issue was the way that people treated litter, especially plastic. We created amap that highlighted the most polluted areas and We then went onto educating thecommunity about why these were such big problems, ways that they were directingcausing these problems, and ways that they could directly help these problems.We did this through seminars, competitions, special classes and other educationalactivities.UANext, we moved to outdoor, action-based activities. We encouraged the communityto put what they had learned into action by starting creative projects that woulddirectly impact the problems we talked about. We did action-based activities like acommunity-wide clean up. We targeted areas where students had done there ownresearch as to the most litter and collected all the plastic and glass to be taken to therecycling plant in the nearest city. We also showed the students creative ways theycould recycle. We asked the student to bring in old clothes and showed them how tosew the old clothes into bags. We then went to the local shop and traded their plasticbags <strong>for</strong> our reusable bags. We also did other outdoor activities like planting treesand creating birdhouses.66 Schools Taking Action For Europe’s Environment
