SECTION TWO: TECHNOLOGY EFFECTS ANDEFFECTIVENESSBing Guo, MD, MScSAFETY AND EFFICACY/EFFECTIVENESS OF BARIATRIC TREATMENTSTRATEGIES (T)IntroductionPurpose <strong>of</strong> assessmentThe purpose <strong>of</strong> this section was to determine the potential role <strong>of</strong> various bariatric <strong>treatments</strong>trategies in Alberta in the management <strong>of</strong> <strong>obesity</strong>.For the purposes <strong>of</strong> this report, a bariatric treatment strategy refers to one or more surgical and/ornon-surgical interventions within a program <strong>of</strong> bariatric services, including different combinationsand sequences <strong>of</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> individual interventions. These interventions are grouped intothe following five broad categories:(1) dietary therapy;(2) physical exercise;(3) behavioural therapy;(4) pharmacotherapy;(5) surgery.ObjectivesThe objective <strong>of</strong> this section is to per<strong>for</strong>m a systematic review and critical appraisal <strong>of</strong> the availableevidence on the safety and efficacy or effectiveness <strong>of</strong> various bariatric treatment strategies <strong>for</strong>people with <strong>obesity</strong> and to determine:the comparative safety <strong>of</strong> various bariatric treatment strategies <strong>for</strong> <strong>adult</strong>s with <strong>obesity</strong>;the comparative efficacy/effectiveness <strong>of</strong> various bariatric treatment strategies <strong>for</strong> <strong>adult</strong>swith <strong>obesity</strong>;the sub-populations <strong>of</strong> <strong>adult</strong>s with <strong>obesity</strong> that are most appropriately treated with thevarious bariatric treatment strategies;the program-based aspects that should be considered within the bariatric treatment strategies.Research questionsThe Technology (T) section <strong>of</strong> the report attempts to address the following overall questions:How do various bariatric treatment strategies compare with respect to safety and efficacy oreffectiveness in the treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>obesity</strong> across relevant patient sub-groups?What are the indications <strong>for</strong> the various bariatric treatment strategies?<strong>Bariatric</strong> <strong>treatments</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>adult</strong> <strong>obesity</strong> 61
