It took the authorit yonly three years to turn 2.5 sq km of contaminated land into abreath-taking green park, and is also one of the largest newurban parks created in Europe for more than 150 years.Inside the park there are six major sports venues – the OlympicStadium, the Aquatics Centre, the Riverbank Arena, the BasketballArena, the Copper Box and the London Velopark. The athletes’Olympic Village is also situated in the park, complete with amall, restaurants, bars, and cafes to cater for people’s dailyneeds. The observation tower and the largest piece of publicart in Britain, the Arcelor Mittal Orbit, overlooks the park. Alongthe River Lea that runs through the park, over 300,000 wetlandplants and carefully chosen ‘future proof’ trees are planted tocreate a haven for people andwildlife.Maintaining the idea of sustainability, after the Games, the Parkwill be renamed the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to celebratethe Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The facilities inthe park will empower a new university specialising in sportsscience, digital media and green technology, and will contributeto related studies. And the Olympic Village will be converted into3,600 affordable apartments.99
