|||Using the client acceptor to manage scheduler services versus thetraditional scheduler servicesYou can configure the Tivoli Storage Manager client to manage the schedulerprocess using the Tivoli Storage Manager Client Acceptor (CAD). The CADprovides a light-weight timer which automatically starts and stops the schedulerprocess as needed. Alternatively, the traditional method keeps the Tivoli StorageManager scheduler process running continuously. Generally, using the CAD tomanage the scheduler is the preferred method. These methods are compared asfollows:CAD-managed Servicesv Defined using the managedservices schedule option and started withCAD services (dsmcad).v The CAD starts and stops the scheduler process as needed for eachscheduled action.v Requires fewer system resources when idle.v Tivoli Storage Manager client options and Tivoli Storage Manager serveroverride options are refreshed each time the CAD services start ascheduled backup.v Cannot be used with SESSIONINITiation=SERVEROnly backups.Tivoli Storage Manager traditional scheduler servicesv Started with command dsmc sched command.v Remains active, even after scheduled backup is complete.v Requires higher use of system resources when idle.v Tivoli Storage Manager client options and Tivoli Storage Manager serveroverride options are only processed once when dsmc sched is started.v You must restart the scheduler process for updated Tivoli StorageManager options to take effect.Recommendation: Restart the traditional scheduler periodically to free systemresources previously used by system calls.Setting the client scheduler process to run as a background task andstart automatically at boot timeYou can configure the Tivoli Storage Manager client scheduler to run as abackground system task which starts automatically when your system is started. This is true for both CAD-managed and traditional methods of running the TivoliStorage Manager client scheduler. When running a CAD-managed schedule, onlythe CAD process should be set to start automatically at boot time; not thescheduler process. For the traditional method, the scheduler process should be setup to start automatically at boot time. You can configure the CAD to run as a background system task which startsautomatically when your system is started. To configure the CAD to managescheduled backups, you must set the managedservices option to manage thescheduler, or both the scheduler and web client. The method for setting up theCAD as a system task varies for each platform. In order for the scheduler to start unattended, you must enable the client to storeits password by setting the passwordaccess option to generate, and store theAppendix A.
